RISC Participates in SPE Energy Economics & Evaluation Symposium

How can the same energy asset be valued differently by different buyers?

This was one of the key questions explored during the Markets and Asset Evaluation panel at the Society of Petroleum Engineers’ Energy Economics & Evaluation Symposium (E3S Europe 2026).

RISC Advisory’s London Office Director, Gavin Ward, joined industry leaders from bp and EnQuest to discuss the factors influencing asset valuation and transactions in today’s energy sector. A key theme was how different buyers assess and incorporate risk and uncertainty into their valuations.

The discussion also explored the distinction between price and value, recognising that the same asset may be assigned markedly different values by operators depending on their various objectives, capabilities and appetite for risk. These factors remain central to investment decision-making and can have a significant influence on transaction outcomes.

The session provided valuable insights into current market practices and perspectives on energy asset evaluation, while encouraging open discussion among industry professionals.

Following the event, the SPE described the panel as “engaging, interactive and enjoyable”, noting the positive response from attendees and their appreciation for the open and thought-provoking dialogue around a complex subject.

RISC is pleased to have contributed to the discussion and would like to thank the SPE for organising the symposium, as well as all those who participated.
